Making Sense of Science Children's Books

What happens when you read? Your eyes do the seeing, your mind does the thinking and your fingers turn the pages. These parts of your body are co-ordinated by your brain. What does your brain look like and what is it made of? There are a hundred times more nerve cells inside your head than there are people alive in the world! These nerve cells carry electrical messages, not just within the brain, but to each and every part of your body. Your brain has to do much more than receive messages and send them out again: making and storing memories, for instance, and controlling feelings and behaviour. What is so special about your brain? Find out how to keep it fit and busy. Play some games that will really boggle your brain.

Brainbox Memory Game
Steven Rose would like to find out how well people remember things as they get older. If you want to join in his experiment you can try the memory game from the book by

Steven Rose directs the Brain and Behaviour Research Group at the Open University, where he is Professor of Biology. He researches the biological mechanisms of learning and memory. His most recent books for adults include The Making of Memory (winner of the 1993 Rhône~Poulenc Science Book prize); Molecules and Minds, and Not in our Genes.Brain Box is co-written with Alexander Lichtenfels who goes to school in Leeds. Alexander founded, edited and wrote for a magazine, Red Alert, sold in aid of Greenpeace.

Reviews:

" The complexity of brain is lessened by the colorful illustrations and kid-friendly vocabulary of this book. Building synapses is the theme of the book, and most kids will add a few to their own brains as they read Brainbox."
The American Biology Teacher

"An absolutely captivating book to be shared with children at KS1 and read independently by children at KS2."
School Librarian

"This is, as usual, an eminently graphic work that explains the basic concepts with a great clarity and intelligence. The reader can even participate in an experiment on memory."
The Science Book Board

"I think that this book is funny and educational... It also has great pictures that tell you a lot... I would recommend this book to all ages."
Karl Roberts (10 years), SGM Quarterly
