Essays in Biochemistry

This volume of Essays in Biochemistry is a collection of review articles describing how molecules (proteins and nucleic acids) are targeted to, and transported across, various membrane-bound organelles within eukaryotic cells. Although the molecules and targets vary, common themes are developed while the differences between the molecular mechanisms are explored. Functional consequences of molecular targeting, such as transcriptional regulation and immunological implications, are also discussed.

The 1999 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Dr Gunter Blobel "for the discovery that proteins have intrinsic signals that govern their transport and localization in the cell". The award acknowledges the importance of the study of how newly synthesized protein and RNA find their correct destination within the cell. This volume describes advances being made in this field of research. Students (and their teachers) who are undertaking advanced studies in cell biology will find this book extremely useful.

Contents:

  • Protein targeting and translocation at the endoplasmic reticulum membrane – through the eye of a needle? SL Meacock et al.
  • The immunological properties of endoplasmic reticulum chaperones: a conflict of interest? CV Nicchitta and R Reed
  • Glycosylation and protein transport P Scheiffele and J Füllekrug
  • Vesicular transport F Barr
  • Functions and origins of the chloroplast protein-import machinery DJ Schnell
  • Mechanisms of mitochondrial protein import D Pain et al.
  • Pore relations: nuclear pore complexes and nucleocytoplasmic exchange
    MP Rout and JD Aitchison
  • Nuclear transport: never-ending cycles of signals and receptors DM Barry and SR Wente
  • The control of gene expression by regulated nuclear transport ED Schwoebel and MS Moore
  • RNA export: insights from viral models ME Harris and TJ Hope

Reviews:
"this book is a useful teaching aid for most aspects of protein trafficking, and I would certainly recommend it to my students...."
Karin Romisch, Journal of Cell Science

"Overall, advanced students will find the volume's sophisticated yet accessible approach makes it an ideal companion to primary research papers."
Nature Cell Biology

"Bernstein and the Portland Press have done a wonderful job of getting some of the most important participants in the field to produce papers. This is an excellent review for anyone needing one. I hope that Portland Press continues to produce similar reviews for many years to come."
Tony Reynolds, Biologist
