Wenner-Gren

This book contains the proceedings from a conference honouring the 100th birthday of Sven Hörstadius, one of the great experimental embryologists of the 20th century. The chapters are written by leading researchers working in the tradition pioneered by Hörstadius. The book gives an overview of the present state of the two fields to which Hörstadius made important contributions -echinoderm embryology and vertebrate head development, but also contains contributions outside of those areas. In order to give the symposium a touch of future prospects for experimental embryology, the focus was on new developments in fields that were central to Hörstadius´ approach. Induction and pattern formation are old concepts that are now being redefined in molecular terms. The genetic control of development was beyond the grasp of Hörstadius, but is now being discovered at a breathtaking pace. The new synthesis between evolution and development is explored by several authors.

The book is of great interest to researchers and graduate students in cell and developmental biology as well as to zoologists and evolutionary biologists.
