The Cell Biology of Inositol Lipids and Phosphates is the published proceedings of the Biochemical Society's Annual Symposium held at the University of Birmingham on 29-31 March 2006, which featured presentations from international experts from across the field of cell signalling who have contributed to this volume.

This meeting honoured Professor Bob Michell in recognition of his substantial contribution to the field.

"The 2006 Biochemical Annual Symposium focussed on ‘The Cell Biology of Inositol Lipids and Phosphates’. This meeting was hosted by the University of Birmingham for at least two good reasons. Firstly, this University has been and still is an important place for inositol lipid and inositol phosphate research, which is partly due to the long-standing influence of Bob Michell. His retirement in the same year was another good reason for Birmingham to host this symposium providing a welcome opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Bob Michell and the many researchers that worked with him as well as many internationally important contributors to this research area. The organizers did create a good mixture of talks covering the many facets of inositol lipids/phosphates signalling and function. All these talks have now been compiled into a comprehensive book by the editor Mike Wakelam, which enables those who attended the meeting to relive their experiences and those who failed to attend to catch up with the talks they missed."
