Biochemical Society Symposia

Structure and Function in Cell Adhesion is a collection of reviews based on the presentations by invited speakers at the Biochemical Society's Annual Symposium which was held in Manchester on 3-5 December 2007. The meeting brought together many of the world's leading contributors to this important research field to exploring how modern techniques in structural and cell biology have furthered our understanding of the mechanism and dynamics of cell adhesion and its contribution to cell signalling.

The volume covers a wide range of aspects of adhesion, including cadherins, adherens junctions and desmosomes, integrins and focal contacts, receptor tyrosine phosphatases, Notch and Slit-Robo, signalling, adhesive binding to collagen and fibrillin and complex adhesive mechanisms involved in leucocyte migration and malaria. It also embraces biochemical, biophysical, structural, electron microscopical and cell biological techniques, showing how these combine to answer major questions in adhesion.
